Page titles, summaries and headings on Squarespace

How do I change page titles and SEO descriptions on Squarespace?

Squarespace keeps a page’s title, summary and search visibility together in its page settings, and the headings and photo descriptions in the blocks on the page. These steps are for version 7.1, which every new Squarespace site uses.

The title and summary

  1. Open the Pages panel, hover over the page and click the gear icon beside its name.

  2. SEO.

  3. SEO Title: what the page offers and where, between 30 and 60 characters. It is what a search result and a shared link show.

  4. SEO Description: one or two sentences, between 120 and 155 characters.

Your homepage has no description box of its own. It uses the site-wide SEO description in the SEO panel of your site settings, so write that one for the homepage.

A page hidden from search engines

In the same SEO tab, Hide Page from Search Results must be off for every page you want found. It hides the page from search engines while leaving it open to visitors, which is why it is easy to switch on while a page is being built and forget.

One main heading

On templates that show it, Squarespace prints the page title as the Heading 1. Headings you add in a text block then start at Heading 2.

  1. Click into the text block and select the heading text.

  2. Open the Format menu in the text toolbar and choose Heading 2 for a section, or Heading 3 for a part of one.

Squarespace’s own help notes that Google does not penalise more than one Heading 1. The scan still asks for one, because a single main heading is what tells a machine reading the page what the page is about.

Describe your photos

  1. Edit the image block and open its Content tab.

  2. Write what the photo shows in Image alt text. It saves as you type.

The site language

Open the Site Languages panel in your site settings and set the language your pages are written in.

Checking it worked

Open the page, view its source and search for <h1 (one result), name="description" (your summary), noindex (no result) and lang= (your language). Then re-run your scan.

If your screens do not look like this, the wording has moved rather than the setting. Search your platform for the words in bold above. If you still cannot find it, send us the scan link and we will tell you where it is on your setup.
