Your description and the questions on your listing

What should I write in my Google business description?

Two parts of the listing where the words are yours rather than Google’s, on a page that gets quoted about you more often than your own website does. Both need your Google account connected before we can check them, and until then they are left out of your score rather than counted against you.

The description

Write 150 to 750 characters covering what you do, who for, and where. Plain sentences. Name your main services and your towns explicitly, because this is one of the few places on the listing where your own wording is quoted back.

  • No keyword stuffing. Google rejects it and readers skim past it.

  • No prices and no offers. Google does not allow them here and will reject the description.

The questions

Anyone can answer a question on your listing, including somebody who gets it wrong. An unanswered one sits publicly under your name and is read by everyone deciding whether to call. Answering them yourself is the only way to control what they say.

You are also allowed to ask and answer your own. The things people always ring up about, whether you charge for quotes, how far you travel, how soon you can come, are worth putting there deliberately. Keep the answers short and specific: this section is quoted back by assistants more often than its size suggests.
